Satellite radio faces grave iPod challenge

Canadian Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. celebrated its first anniversary of service this month, handily beating its subscriber forecasts. But with the rapid rise of the iPod, the satellite radio business faces new risks. Management consultant Michael Urlocker shows the tough choices disruption imposes on companies.

By some measures, it has been a great year for Canadian Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., the company that serves up XM Satellite radio in Canada:
– Quarterly revenue rose 46% sequentially to $3.4-million;
– 91,200 paying subscribers have signed up, which is ahead of the company’s first-year target of 75,000;
– General Motors has 100,000 cars delivered or on order with XM radios installed and CSR has deals with other car makers including Toyota, Honda and Nissan.
