MTV And RealNetworks Hope To Spoil Apple

Looks like Apple has some new competition.

On Tuesday, traders, and music lovers, learned of a new musical experience soon to drift through their headphones. Viacom’s (nyse: VIA.B – news – people ) MTV Networks and RealNetworks (nasdaq: RNWK – news – people ), a digital media company, have formed a digital music joint venture that will take on Apple’s much-loved iPhone and iPod player.

Here’s how it will work: MTV is merging its online music offerings service, called Urge, into the Rhapsody offering from Real. Consumers will be able to access the new service through their PC, portable music device or mobile phone.
